Blog 24: Last Presentation Reflection

1) Positive Statement

What are you most proud of in your block presentation and/or your senior project? Why?

I am most proud of the work I have put into the presentation all year long. The reason why I a proud of this is because I can see how all my hard work pays off in the end.

I would give myself a P+ because of the information I talked about in my presentation. I also made time according to people in my audience that were keeping track of it.
b.     What assessment would you give yourself on your overall senior project? Use the component contract to defend that assessment.

I would give myself an AE because as a transfer student I believe I did my best to complete the senior project. I would always be on top of my note book and would stay on task during research checks.
(3) What worked for you in your senior project?

What worked best in my opinion was my activity. 

(4) (What didn't work) If you had a time machine, what would you have done differently to improve your senior project?

I would go back and go more in-depth on some of the information I was talking about.
(5) Finding Value

How has the senior project been helpful to you in your future endeavors?   Be specific and use examples.

It taught me how to dive into my research and to keep on looking for different sources of information. It also showed me that I overcame a personal achievement by pushing myself to do better in my volunteering program.

Exit Interview

1) My EQ is how can a deputy encourage a positive community relation and my answers are deputy interaction, community events, and media issues. My best answer is through deputy interactions since it is something I see on a first hand basis.

2) My process was long and it took time. It was difficult because I switched my EQ during my senior year.

3) A problem I faced was finding enough resources. I resolved this by looking at what aspect play into communications.

4) My two significant sources came from TEDTalk Videos and my interviews with deputies. These are my most essential because I feel they gave me a lot of information.

Blog 22: Independent Component 2

I, Isaiah Garcia, affirm that I completed my independent component which represents 120 hours of work

I used my volunteer hours at the LASD Explorer Program.  
I completed my hours by going on ride along, attending city event to help the communities relation with Law Enforcement, and  I went go to meeting at the LASD Walnut/Diamond Bar/Rowland Heights Sheriff Station.

During my ride alongs I would get first hand training on how communication with Law Enforcement and the community really is like. I saw how important it is to have a good relationship because it can change the outcome of any situation. I also saw how important it is to show that Law Enforcement is here to help the community not make the community fear them. Through city event I helped build relations by talking to the community. I helped by showing younger generations that Law Enforcement are here to help them. In one case I helped reunite a mother and her child. During my Explorer meeting we would go over what actions to take on certain calls that a deputy would be called out for.

It helped me because of the first hand training I got. During a ride along I had to go to a home to help fill out some paper work on a possible unhealthy environment for a child to live in. It turned out that the claim was untrue but I found out that the kids mother was last seen in the custody of LASD. The kids were extremely shy to talk with the deputy and myself. The deputy went out of cop mode and into parent mode. He began to talk to the kids in a calmer manner and tried to connect with the kids. I tried to make them more relax by giving the kids little "Jr Deputy" stickers. By the time we left the home the kids wouldn't stop talking to us with tremendously big smile about video games. Through this I believe we helped change the kids view on Law Enforcement.

Blog 19: Third Answer

Essential Question: How can a Deputy encourage a positive community relation?

My third answer is through sheriff stations getting involved with community events.

My research is coming from the communication officers. Another source I will be using are actual events that I will be attending.

Blog 18: Answer 2

1) My essential question is, how can a deputy encourage a positive community relation?

2) My first answer was the role that patrol officers had with the community.
3) My second answer is the role of the communication officer.
4) A communication officer's role is to communicate with the community. They do so through talking with the community at community gatherings. Some communication officers will visit schools and talk to the kids. Other communication officers would run meetings with the community.

5) A printed out source that best supports my answer is an article that describes what the neighborhood watch meetings have with the community and communication officer.
6) Another source that will support my answer are the interviews I had with Deputy Scheller and Deputy Denver, who are the communication officers for Rowland Heights and Diamond Bar.

7) This all comes together because most people usually come in contact with law enforcement on a negative note. However, a communication officers role is to help build a bond with the community.

Blog 16: Independent Component 2 Approval

1.  Describe in detail what you plan to do for your 30 hours.

1) Since my essential question is focusing around community relations, I will be using my explorer program as a way to do my hours. An example would be me helping out at city events with kid prints. By doing this I would be building a positive relation between Law Enforcement and the community.

2.  Discuss how or what you will do to meet the expectation of showing 30 hours of evidence.

2) I will be going on ride along, helping out the city, and helping with in the Walnut/Diamond Bar Sheriff Station Explorer Program.

3.  Explain how this component will help you explore your topic in more depth.

3) By doing this I will be putting myself inside the workplace of a deputy and I will be able to see what actions I can do to improve relations with the community.

Lesson 2 Reflection

1. I am most proud of the quality of my lesson. I feel like I really taught the class about my subject in law enforcement.

2. a.     What assessment would you give yourself on your Lesson 2 Presentation (self-assessment)?

     b.     Explain why you deserve that grade using evidence from the Lesson 2 component contract.
            I believe I deserve this grade because of my quality of the lesson. I also had my EQ up on the      board. Another reason was because I believe that I also passed the mark with dressing professionally.

3. What worked for you in your Lesson 2?
    I feel that my activity worked really well during my Lesson 2 presentation.

4. What didn't work? If you had a time machine, what would you have done differently to improve your Lesson 2?
    I think what didn't work was just the beginning of my activity. I probably would have gotten rid of just that section.

5. What do you think your answer #2 is going to be?
     My answer two can be what happens during a community meeting.

Blog 14: Third Interview Preparation- How can a Deputy encourage positive community relations?

1. I plan on interviewing three candidates. My first candidate will be my mentor, Deputy Mrad. My second candidate will be Deputy Denver. My last candidate will Deputy Scheller. All three deputies have very close relations to the community and all three encourage positive interaction in different ways.

2. At the current moment I have received the contact information to two new sources which are Deputy Denver and Deputy Scheller. I plan on contacting them and having an interview before the end of the month.
3. What do you believe is the most effective way to communicate to the community?

4. What is an example of positive community relations that can be preformed anywhere? 
5. How has the community relations changed over time with law enforcement?
    What, if any, is a growing issue to overcome with the relations between the community and law enforcement.

Blog 13: 10 Hour Mentorship Check-In

1. My mentorship is at the Walnut/Diamond Bar Sheriff Station.

2. My contact is Deputy Mrad. Deputy Mrad started in 1988. He joined the Compton Police Department and went to the academy, Rio Honda Academy. Upon completion of the academy he had a training officer for six months. After completing his patrol training he worked patrol for about a year and a half and then I was asked to become a undercover narcotics officer. He became an undercover police officer. He worked narcotics for about six months in an undercover capacity and after six months he returned to patrol. He worked patrol for maybe about another year and tested for motor officer. He became a motor officer for a few months. Due to budget cuts he had to come off motors and go back to patrol. At this time he tested for K9 and became a K9 handler for 92 until 2000. In around 95 to 98, the police department formed their first SWAT team and he became part of that time as a K9 handler, because every SWAT team has a K9. So they sent him to K9 SWAT School and became part of that team until 2000. As soon as the sheriff’s department took over, he went to Carson station for about six months and ended up returning to Compton and working there as a Deputy Sheriff for about a year. He transferred over to Industry station and he was there for about a 2 year and he became a training officer and I transferred to Walnut to where he is currently assigned as a training officer. He trains several full time deputies and reserved deputies and became a full time FTO, Field Training Officer.
3. I've done more then 115 plus hours of mentorship

4 .I help with the training of explorers and prepare recruits for the pre academy for the explorer program. I also help with the color guard for the Walnut/Diamond Bar Sheriff Station. Another thing I do is go on ride alongs to get hands on training and experience on what a Deputy does.

Blog 12: Holiday Project Update

1. Over brake, I spent time with the explorer program. We are recently preparing to train another class of applicants to be recruits and soon explorers.

2. An important thing that I learned was getting back into the basic ideas. Since I am helping to train another class of explorers, we train them to the basics of what a Sheriff academy might be like.

3. I plan on talking about how much opportunities that are available. What I want to go in depth in my interview is how can you travel to different  stations or apply to different fields.
